The officer's deck between dreams & reality

Lidija Buzzing

1. The Luxury Life:

Expectation: As an officer, you're living the high life. You're imagined having a large cabin with ocean views, frequenting the finest dining halls, and mingling with elite guests.
🆚
Reality: While officers might have better accommodations than the general crew, it's often not the luxurious suite people imagine. Meals are typically in crew or officer mess areas, and there's little time for leisurely mingling due to responsibilities.

2. Exotic Adventures Every Day:

Expectation: Every port brings a new adventure, a chance to explore tropical paradises, historic cities, and vibrant local cultures.
 🆚
Reality: Port days can often mean additional work, overseeing crew changes, supplies being loaded, or attending to administrative duties. There might be occasions where you don't even disembark because of your duties on board.

3. Calm Seas & Smooth Sailing:

Expectation: Life on the ship is always on calm waters, with the ship gliding effortlessly from one destination to another.
 🆚
Reality: Weather can be unpredictable. Navigating through rough seas, storms, or adverse weather conditions is challenging and demands increased vigilance and work.

4. A Close-Knit Crew Family:

Expectation: Working and living together means the ship's crew is like a tight-knit family, always getting along.
 🆚
Reality: While deep bonds are forged, conflicts arise. As an officer, managing interpersonal conflicts and ensuring a harmonious work environment becomes a crucial part of the job.

5. Endless Leisure Time:

Expectation: Off-duty hours are spent sunbathing on the deck, enjoying the ship's amenities, or reading leisurely with the vast ocean as a backdrop.
 🆚
Reality: Off-duty hours can be spent catching up on sleep, connecting with family back home, or preparing for the next day. The officer's schedule is rigorous, and personal time is often limited.

6. Seamless Operations:

Expectation: Everything runs like clockwork. As an officer, you simply need to oversee operations, with everything falling into place.
 🆚
Reality: Behind the scenes, there's constant troubleshooting, dealing with unexpected challenges, equipment malfunctions, or even medical emergencies. Being an officer means being ready for the unpredictable.

While the allure of the sea is undeniable, the role of an officer on a cruise ship is not just about romantic sunsets and glamorous dinners. It's about dedication, resilience, and a deep love for the oceanic life and all.

Kako sam postala Fractional CHRO

Snaga promene U poslu, kao i u životu, jedna stvar me uvek vodila – promene. Iskreno, mnogima i danas nije jasno šta tačno radim. „Jesi li HR?“ – jesam. „Jesi li konsultant?“ – i to.

No escape. Just growth.

I Ran Away. Then I Came Back. I never liked asking for help. I don’t know if society, family, or simply life taught me that, but I know that when things get tough – you grit your teeth and push through. Who needs weakness? Who needs to show they don’t know something? That they can’t handle it? Here, you either figure it out or you disappear. In this country, in this time. And everyone who knows me also knows that I worked abroad. That I ran away, but that I also returned. Always returned. And here I am now, once again. With her. My coach. They told me she was good. That she cuts to the bone , but that it’s worth it. I told myself I could handle it. That I wanted to. Coaching. A word that people here misunderstand, dismiss, or mock. Why would anyone pay someone to ask them questions? they say. But coaching is not about the questions—it’s about the answers you don’t want to hear. And she knows exactly which ones to bring out. The first time I sat across from her, I felt relie...
